Sello Maake KaNcube is once again proving that his heart is as big as his talent, launching an inspiring series of free theatre workshops for aspiring actors in Johannesburg. The initiative, which began on April 28, 2025, at the Soweto Theatre, aims to nurture the next generation of South African performers by providing hands-on training in acting, improvisation, script analysis, and stagecraft. With over 50 participants enrolled in the first week alone, the workshops have already become a beacon of hope for young artists from diverse backgrounds, many of whom lack access to formal training programs. Sello’s commitment to community upliftment shines through in this endeavor, reflecting his belief that “theatre is a tool for empowerment and transformation.”
The workshops, held every Saturday, are designed to be inclusive, welcoming participants aged 16 to 30 with varying levels of experience. Sello, who is currently rehearsing for his starring role in Master Harold and the Boys at Joburg Theatre (opening June 11, 2025), personally leads many of the sessions, sharing insights from his extensive career. Topics include character development, vocal projection, and the emotional authenticity required to connect with audiences. Guest facilitators, including directors and casting agents, also join to provide industry perspectives, giving participants a holistic view of the theatre world. One attendee, 19-year-old Thandiwe Maseko, described the experience as “life-changing,” noting, “Sello makes us feel like we can achieve anything. His energy is infectious.”
The program has garnered support from local organizations, with the Joburg Theatre offering free rehearsal spaces and the Department of Arts and Culture providing materials. Sello’s vision extends beyond the workshops, as he plans to showcase participants’ work in a community performance later this year. He sees this as a way to bridge the gap between emerging talent and professional opportunities. “When I started, I had people who believed in me,” Sello said. “Now it’s my turn to pass that on.” The workshops have also sparked excitement for his upcoming play, with many participants eager to attend Master Harold and the Boys. Tickets, priced at R150 to R200, are available at Webtickets. Follow Sello’s website for updates on the workshops and how you can support this incredible initiative. Let’s celebrate Sello’s generosity and his continued impact both on and off the stage!
